1. Character’s Name: Tetra
2. Fandom: The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker
3. Time Frame: Immediately following the point in which Tetra learns that Link has departed to Jabun’s Cavern.
4. Age: Age is never specified in the game. My guess is that she is between 12-14 years of age.
5. Background:
The Legend of Zelda franchise is a long winded tale with many overlapping stories within it. For more information on its prologue, go here. For more information about Ganondorf, go here. For more information about Ocarina of Time, go here.
The beginning of Tetra's story takes place one hundred years before her birth, in an ancient, archaic land called Hyrule. The royal family of the kingdom bore the power of the Triforce, a three part emblem each individually consecrated by the Goddesses that ruled over the land. The Triforce was so omnipotent, that once in possession, it could grant it's wielder anything their heart coveted. Yet, where there is great power, there is also bound to be one who wishes to use it for heinous purposes. A sorcerer by the name of Ganondorf longed for such domination, and attacked the kingdom to claim the Triforce as his own.
When provisions were exasperated and all hope seemed lost, a hero emerged from seemingly nowhere. Nameless, ageless, and cloaked in green garb, the hero rose to the challenge of subduing Ganondorf and restoring power to the crippling kingdom. With the assistance of Seven Wise Sages, the Triforce of Courage, and the sacred Master Sword, the hero eventually succeeded in defeating Ganon and sealing him in The Sacred Realm, a mythical plane conceived by the Goddesses. Before the hero could be exalted into the mountaintops, he disappeared without a trace, leaving behind a now-prosperous Hyrule and a legion of unanswered questions.
With Ganondorf extinguished, an era of order blessed the kingdom and it's people. Yet, the Sacred Realm in which Ganondorf was confined was not as impervious. Before long, the seal that separated the Sacred Realm from the physical world began to deteriorate, and eventually it shattered, allowing for Ganon's escape and time to formulate yet another plan to ravage Hyrule for the Triforce's power. Hyrule's civilization prayed for the return of the sword-wielding hero to no avail. Beset to the brink of its knees, the people of Hyrule directed their benedictions to the Goddesses themselves, who decided to terminate any chance of entry into Hyrule by flooding the kingdom and dispatching it beneath the sea. The people took to the mountaintops and watched as their ancient land and Ganondorf vanished forever.
Now, flash-forward one hundred years to present-day. The story of Ganondorf and the green tunic clad hero is merely an age-old legend to the inhabitants of the Great Sea and all the islands therein. The Sea itself is full of bustling activity, including pirating. Tetra, a sea-fairing nomad, was one of these freebooting buccaneers. With the impending self-rule that resulted from virtually no nuclear or extended family, as her mother died very early on, Tetra managed to souge herself a small six-man band of hooligans and call it a life roaming The Great Sea for the prospect of treasure. Upon her death, Tetra's mother had given her an artifact that would later foreordain her daughter's true fate. To honor her mother’s dying wish, the young girl swore to guard the gift with her life.
A southwest atoll by the name of Outset Island is the backdrop for the present story as it unfolds. Inhabited by cheerful heirs of the Hyrulian race, Outset is rich with the myths of old, particularly that of The Hero of Legend. The folklore is so deeply embedded into Outset culture that all boys coming-of-age are dressed in customary sword-clad garb to emanulate the figure in the tale. Link, an average, maturing boy, is not freed from that responsibility. On his birthday, he’s given these garbs by his grandmother. However, this seemingly peaceful day would quickly turn perilous in a breakneck speed.
An strange, exceptionally-large Kargaroc snatched Tetra from her pirate ship out at sea as her crew watched on in horror. Not the type of band to burn daylight when danger surfaced, Tetra’s crew went to work— ejecting a massive rock via catapult to disable the bird’s hold on their feisty captain. The Kargaroc bird was, in fact, called The Helmaroc King, one of the secretly revived Ganondorf’s valets of capture. Seizing Tetra turns futile, however, as she is dropped in The Forest of Fairies, a secluded, metaphysical coppice in the coast of Outset Island.
From safety, Link watched the girl drop from the skies and sprung to aid in her distress. Dangling willy-nilly from a tree, Link eventually hit upon Tetra and one of her dull crew members. Tetra regained consciousness from her snag on a branch and began to wrangle herself free, eventually bringing the branch ground-level. Once she pulled herself together, she was reminded of her capture, barely acknowledged Link’s role in her rescue, and left the forest for her devoted ship waiting at bay. Link trailed behind, in curiosity or what have you.
The Helmaroc King was not deterred by that minor blow. As they emerged from The Forest of Fairies, Link caught view of Aryll, his innocent younger sister, disappearing from eyesight in the grasps of the Kargaroc. Granted, The Helmaroc King had mistaken Aryll for Tetra, much to Link's alarm. In well-intended desperation, Link pleaded to board Tetra’s pirate ship to track where the bird had taken his sister... only to be promptly denied by the captain herself. It is only until Tetra is reminded that she should have been — and would have been — the one in Helmaroc’s grasp that she relents to Link’s wishes by the guilt of her own name, albeit grumbling.
Sailing the high seas with Tetra and her crew is short lived. On the way, Link gained some maneuvering skills from Niko, the crew goon, before he is signaled to top deck by nightfall. There, Tetra explained that Aryll was taken to a heavily guarded, hazardous bastille by the name of The Forsaken Fortress. Since close proximity with the Fortress was nearly suicidal, Tetra opted for Link’s transportation the old-fashioned way: by catapult. Before the child is chucked across sea, she leaves him with a parting gift — a network jewel called The Pirate's Charm in which the two could maintain some sort of contact, if need be.
Link's attempt at rescuing his sister at the Fortress comes to naught when he is cast away by Helmaroc King into The Great Sea. Tetra and her crew abide in the Fortress as Link is chucked off the main tower, knowing best not to attempt retrieving him. Link’s life was no more as far as Tetra was concerned, and in his absence, there was leeway to continue her journeying in peace.
Link survived the ejection, however. Before he could drown in the depths of the ocean, he was saved by a talking boat referred to as the King of Red Lions. In order to combat the unrelenting waves of the Great Sea, the boat granted Link a magical baton called the Wind Waker, in which he could tame the skies by playing a commanding tune. Who was previously just a normal young boy was now thrust into the position of a hero, as the King of Red Lions informed Link that Ganondorf was alive, and great evils were brewing in his wake. To defeat him, Link had to journey the sea to find the Blade of Evil's Bane (previously known as the Master Sword). Dauntless, Link sent forth to save his lands.
As time passed, a chain of events lead Tetra to learn of Link’s wellbeing — alive, thankfully, and doing well. But perhaps an even greater news to the pirate crew is the hint of treasure on Outset Island, hidden inside the treacherous Jabun’s Cavern. The Cavern was heavily sealed, and virtually inaccessible without the possession of bombs. Tetra, fueled with motivation, traveled to Windfall Island, a prosperous commerce center in which anything imaginable was imported, exported, and then sold for profit.
Tetra’s crew were not the only people of importance to travel to Windfall Island. As the pirates argued with a bomb shop owner over pricing values, Link managed his way inside the shop as well, his mission similar — attain bombs to break into Jabun’s Cavern, although for very different, more or less noble, purposes. Tetra detected the boy from the corner of her eye but remained silent, leaving him with an all-knowing wink. In privacy, Tetra contacted Link with the Pirate’s Charm to declare a contest for the Cavern. Tetra was convinced her crew would make it before Link did— even if he did manage to nab some free bombs from her pirate ship while her crew relaxed.
Mightier forces were plotting during this time period, and an enveloping curse called the Endless Night forced Tetra’s crew to stay behind and wade the turbulent seas. Thus, Link made it to the Cavern first, thanks to the King of Red Lions and the Wind Waker. There, he obtained Nayru’s Pearl, an mythical artifact that broke the curse placed upon the seas by Ganondorf.
With the Endless Night obsolete and the Master Sword finally in his possession, Link returned to The Forsaken Fortress to rescue his sister once more. What he didn't know, however, was that Tetra and her pirate crew were following him to lend their own assistance. The pirates snaked themselves into the tower and freed Aryll while Link killed The Helmaroc King.
The extend of Tetra's strangely altruistic nature had not ended there. When Link failed to defeat Ganondorf upon meeting him in the Fortress, as the Master Swords's power had grown lifeless, Tetra rushed to his rescue. Her attack does little against Ganondorf’s strength, and underneath a gripping clutch around her neck, Ganondorf declared that when Link pulled the Master Sword from it's podium, he, in effect, broke the seal that had been previously blocking Ganon's power. Ganondorf also dropped the name ‘Zelda’ as Tetra's necklace resonated with his Triforce of Power.
Tetra soon lost consciousness in Ganon's clutch, but the pair is ultimately rescued by Quill and Komali, two friends Link had encountered while travelling. Quill and Komali's dragon friend, Valoo, later swooped in to envelope Ganondorf's tower in burning fire. Link and Tetra were carried to the King of Red Lions to regain their bearings and formulate a plan. The sentient boat then conversed with Valoo, noting that Ganon had not died in the fire, and was taking refuge in the seas. Link and Tetra then traveled underwater to the sunken kingdom of Hyrule to find the spot where Link had found the now-dulled Master Sword.
Tetra’s true fate soon made itself known as they came across a massive King waiting for them in the basement of the kingdom's palace. He was King of the old Hyrule, the King of Red Lions in true form--- Daphnes Hohansen Hyrule. He was the ruler of the kingdom that was submerged beneath the waves of the sea and closed off with a massive bubble. Daphnes revealed to Tetra that she was indeed the incarnate of Princess Zelda of the Royal Hyrulean Line and heir of the Triforce, the pendant she had always worn around her neck being a piece of the Triforce of Wisdom. Just like when Ganondorf hinted this shocking revelation, Tetra took this with a grain of salt at best. It is not until Daphnes, to prove to the pirate and seal the transformation, bound her to her destiny with the three pieces of the Triforce: Din’s Triforce of Power, Nayru’s Triforce of Wisdom, and Farore’s Triforce of Courage.
After her metamorphosis into Princess Zelda, King Daphnes requested that Tetra best not follow Link to his next destination, as her identity was now known and under threat from Ganondorf. Thus, she remained in the basement of the castle while Link and the King resurfaced to have a discussion concerning the next development of their plan.
To 're-boot' his Master Sword, Link had to seek out inheritors of the Sages of Old and have them pray upon the Blade to awaken it's power. Link set out on this task, finding each Sage using his Wind Waker and leading them to their respective temples. Once the Blade of Evil's Bane was restored to it's full potential, Link resurfaced the eight missing links to the Triforce of Courage from the bottom of The Great Sea. Once assembled, the Triforce transported Link down to Hyrule once more to fulfill his true purpose.
However, when Link returned to the castle, it was in shambles, as Ganondorf had raided the basement and kidnapped Tetra in her royal form. Now with more reason to fight than ever, Link used his Master Sword to break through Ganondorf's protective barrier and begin an ambush against the malicious sorcerer.
With newly gained prowess kindled by the Triforce, Tetra fought back against her captor alongside Link. The arrows she possessed had now been blessed by the power of light, and were terribly effective against the dark lord. During the battle, Ganon managed to quell Tetra's onslaught by knocking the wind out from her, but she soon rose up in determination, using Link's shield as a deflector to guild her arrow's directly against Ganondorf.
In a matter of time, Link and Tetra's plan succeeded. Ganondorf was defeated, and Link and Tetra returned to King Daphnes to share their news and learn of Hyrule's fate. The King, in remorseful acceptance, revealed that he was due in part to blame for Ganondorf's reemergence, and the only way to kill off Ganondorf for good was to flood Hyrule and allow it to remain hidden among thousands of thousands of miles of ocean. The King then requested of the pair to leave the destroyed castle and remake a new Hyrule in the surface, free from corruption and impurity.
Link and Tetra followed through with the King's plan. Safety finally restored, Tetra put the adventure behind her and returned to her pirating life, now with new insight about her past, and kindled hope for the future to come.
6. Personality:
As a pirate, Tetra is a straight-shooter to acute ends. Her strong personality can very well be the main reason she’s the captain of an entire ship with holds over six grown men probably twice her age. She lives in the arena of action and profit, instinctive, and quick to decide on matters without rethinking and mulling over past decisions. She’s more than willing to improvise and dirty her hands in the name of glittering treasure at the end of the tunnel.
Along with the uncanny capability to identify other’s motivations behind the tiniest of clues of hints, as in facial expressions or posture that usually goes unnoticed by others, Tetra regularly strives to be one step ahead of anyone she’s interacting with. This ability enables her to get what she wants out a situation without making her wishes directly known: call it manipulative, but it certainly gets the job done. Not to mention, her “get it and go” attitude is not obstructed by rules, laws, or regulations — a common mentality shared by all true pirates of the sea. Tetra is stubborn and impulsive, and tends to stick strong to her plan of action, taking little heed towards an elder’s wish or her crew’s forewarning. Guilt could be used to sway her, along with much persuasion, but that’s only under special circumstances.
Because of this stubbornness, Tetra can seem off putting, selfish, and rude to some, especially those who value round-a-bout methods of communicating, which she strongly detests. Tetra becomes impatient with drawn out explanations and convoluted reasoning, and sees little use for extending a conversation or argument once she’s felt that she’s made her point. Kinds of people who are complex by nature bring out confusion and suspicions within her, causing her to brush them off completely. Anyone who can’t help her reach a goal is seen as useless. She is not afraid to point out other people’s flaws, not particularly to be cruel, as she generally thinks little of the deeper effects her words might produce in others. Her thought-process involves getting to the brunt of things and very little else.
On the inside, however, Tetra seems to possess a soft spot for those she ends up being fond of. If they've sparked some sort of liking, she will, at intervals, take time out of her sea roaming goals to assist them in their time of need. She doesn’t seem to break any promises, and has a strong sense of loyalty that many other pirates cannot own up to. These parts of her personality are those Tetra never reveals in public, and if anyone dares to point them out, they’ll best be expecting denial or backlash. Well-intentional ”tough love” is more her cup of tea than gratuitous, over abounding displays of affection.
Tetra performs best without restrictions or confinements. When faced with peril in which a prior plan failed to work, improvising is her specialty.
7. Previous Game Developments: N/A
8. Appearance:
Official Art
In-Game Model
It is important to note that Tetra is only around three to four feet tall, maintaining her 'toon-like' appearance that deviates from other portrayals in the Zelda franchise. All her clothes, weapons, and times, for example, are also proportionally sized for her body.
9. Abilities:
Despite her misleading appearance and age, Tetra is by no means fragile. She’s efficient in the art of swordplay, and even more so at archery. Usually, the need to demonstrate such prowess does not come by often, and only when circumstances are dire is when she’ll step up and attempt to kill an assailant. More often than not, scare-tactics and threats are how she gains an upper hand.
If leadership and maritime-acumen can be considered a skill, then Tetra is the ultimate poster girl. Canons, pirate ships, the art of direction, map reading and the like are all skills under her belt. When there’s a need for a strong, take-charge type of person, Tetra will surely rise to the challenge.
10. Languages: Tetra writes and speaks in Hylian.
11. Items: Tetra will carry the Pirate’s Charm, a communication stone worn around the neck that enables her to network with anyone wearing another one. Since the likelihood of someone else in the Keep possessing one is pretty much beyond the bounds of possibility (unless a WW Link comes along with one in his possession), the charm will be of no real use to her.
12. Weapons:
Her set of bow and arrow, and her short sword. In Holloway’s Keep, these items will be dulled, and she’ll own a finite number of arrows. Whether or not she can gain more is up to the mods.
13. Writing sample - Third Person:
It was a pitiful sight to behold, truly, what she was presented with on the bottom deck. Above the bristly wood of the ship's railing, traces of sea foam conceived from the moth of the onerous waves that served to carry her vessel to fortune's next dwelling place, the rising dusk began to expose itself to the expanse of sky overhead. She'd seen many a tender-footed traveler gaze in amazement at the sky's view, without obstruction from buildings, edifices, or man-made constructions of the like. Perhaps once or twice she, too, had taken a fulfilled appreciation at the view as well, yet not as often as any other. She was accustomed to all shades of sunrise, probably every single one known to a pirate, some even more dazzling then the foggy expanse of bronze today.
However, this morning, Tetra could not savor any sense of calm, not even for a second or two. She grimaced in bitter taste at the strangest scalawag of her pirate crew, the little Mako, dashing across the deck bare-footed, piddling thumps as his feet shuffled against the woodwork. He was distressed, conclusive enough from his facial expression alone, and doing a supposedly calming pace around the ship to ease the nerves. The buzz word was "supposedly", because nothing about pacing around was anything but a waste of valuable time. Besides, pirates didn't fret over matters--- they initiated them.
And not to mention, the thumping sound was more than migraine inducing at five o'clock in the morning.
"Oi!" The shrill of Tetra's stringent call electrified Mako into a frozen posture before his stocky head turned a one eighty to meet her, standing cross-armed and teeth-clenched on the uppermost deck. Tetra responded to the tiny quiver in his lip with a mighty glint in her eye, taking but a second to savor in her higher domination. She was still the voice of reason. She was still in charge. She was still the pirate man's captain.
Tetra then sighed, having determined her silence was nearly about to initiate Mako's pants wetting--- and truly, who would want to deal with that, having her nostrils contaminated with the foul stench of urination as a result of fright? Not fun. No doubt Mako would ramble about every single thing troubling him if she asked, no matter how insignificant: how they should probably move a slight more off-course to avoid a clash with the bountiful number of seafaring monsters that would have to be defeated by their limited supply of canons, and so on and so forth. She had heard it all.
In some aspect, she could admire Niko's forte for provision and double-checking, something that she, admittingly, didn't have. Tetra supposed that having a worry-wart on board wasn't too bad; Mako respected her like she was some three foot God, after all, and would safely quiet down or surrender to following orders merely to monosyllabic responses to boss him around. That much was great, in fact. And the countless number of times they've evaded that galling sea creature that always seemed to be following their ship wherever it went, thanks to his careful planning...
...So Mako was useful. A true shame he didn't possess the guts and the impulsiveness needed to become a real pirate, however. That much was obvious.
"Is there any good reason you're running around deck like some sort of wild animal, or can I just go back to bed now and save myself the headache?" Mako's back straightened out some as Tetra made her way down the stairs, or hell, as much as he could, considering that he always seemed to walk in a slouch. Shoulders popped with ease as Tetra stretched about, before crossing her arms expectantly before her crew-member.
"W-Well, ya' see Miss Tetra..." Mako moved a quivering hand to straighten out those obnoxious-looking glasses of his. Tetra watched his movements in mild disinterest, quietly wondering about how bad his breakdown would extend if she "accidentally" chucked those blasted pieces of lens into the ocean, submerging into the watery depths for all eternity...
Hey, a girl could dream, couldn't she?
"Miss Tetra?"
Tetra reemerged out of her daydream with a sharp jolt, meeting Mako's inquisitive expression with widened eyes. He pulled a hand away from previously having to wave it frantically in front of her face, then moved to wipe some snot dripping from his left nostril.
In the name of Nayru, he was never gonna get a girlfriend.
"What?"
"Didn'tcha hear me?" Mako gestured to the book that he always hand in his possession, flipping through the pages that contained the countless number of maps that graphed every square inch of the expanse of the Great Sea. "According to my calculations, I've been noticin' that we might hit anotha Big Octo if we continue on this path. We've been runnin' out of bombs lately, and it's better to save the canons for the big bo--"
"...That's all?" Tetra interrupted his string of babble, waving a hand in dismissal. "That's all that was bugging you? Listen here, I'm really beginning to think you wear those massive spectacles just to compensate for some sense. Especially if you're thinking about changing course."
"B-But, Miss Tetra!" Mako began to gesture wildly with the hand not in grasp of the book, which was unfortunate, because his snot was not in free reign to run down his upper lip. "I implore of ya', we gotta change course! If not, there'll be some bad consequences!"
Tetra shook her head and turned around with all intent of returning to her cabin. As she moved her head away, her eyes caught the murky reflection of the ocean across from her, constantly changing, swaying as the ripples created an unsteady reflection of the rising sun above.
"We're not changing course, got it?" Her mind was still foggy thanks to her sleep disruption, but at least her commanding voice still rang strong. In fact, she could feel the obedience, the disappointment, just oozing from Mako's aura behind her. And damn, it felt good. "Next time you got something to say, make sure it's important. And talk to Gonzo about it. I'm going to bed."
Tetra smirked at his relenting 'Yes, Miss Tetra.' No matter what anyone said, she sure did love her boys.
14. Writing Sample - First Person:
Where are we? Where’s the booty? I turn my back for three seconds and somehow you morons manage to mess everything up— Ah!
[Within the confines of the video screen, the speaker's already ample eyes widen at the impromtu realization of her surroundings, and the foreign journal laying in her wake. Stubby fingertips reach for the strange object, effectively obscuring the view in the process. Seconds later... and the feed ends.
Just like that.
Have no consternation, however, for the feed returns a minute later. Behind the screen is an comically stocky-looking girl of a more calm demeanor, but not necessarily composed, as she still had no idea where she was. By now, she's read the message from Deior, bringing upon some inkling of information. It was better than nothing.]
Alright, if any of you wrote this letter and trapped me in some obscure room in the back of a cheap bar, all of you boneheads are cleaning the toilets with your toothbrushes every night for an entire week. Every night!
...Yet again, most of you idiots can't even read, and the ones who can are probably illiterate...
[Couldn't dismiss that from her memory.]
Well, whatever. But come on, really? "Ontological cataclysm"? That sounds like the beginning of a story from some drunken night out at sea! And listen, I don't think you understand; I was just transporting some treasure onto my ship a moment ago, and time's a wasting. I need to get back to the Great Sea, pronto.
So, where's this hoity-toity sounding Lord? Better yet, where's the exit out of this ding-hole? Or hell... where's my crew?

15. Tattoo: On the small of her lower back.
16. Room Preference: No preference!
